Sapporo, The country's third largest city in area, is located on
the western plains of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan.
More than 60% of Sapporo-primarily in the south west- is mountainous,
creating a concentration of urban activity focused around the Toyohira
River, which runs through the city.

Population
Approximately 100 years ago, Sapporo had a population of 10,831.
With 1,483,182 citizens by May 1983, it surpassed Kyoto's population
and became Japan's fifth largest city after Tokyo, Yokohama, 0saka
and Nagoya. As of June 2005, population of Sapporo is approximately
1.8 million.
Climate
Sapporo is located in a sub-frigid zone and enjoys cool, pleasant
summers although winters are cold and snowy. First snowfalls can
be expected in October but doesn't accumulate until December. Low-pressure
fronts from Siberia bring heavy snow in January and February, with
average temperatures of -4.1 digrees in January, the coldest month.
