Basic Information about Sapporo

Sapporo is the capitol of Hokkaido and the fifth largest city in Japan in terms of population. The city is best known as host of the 1972 Olympic Winter Games and the city’s name is synonymous with the Sapporo Beer brand. The city’s name is derived the language of the Ainu, the indigineous people of Hokkaido. Possible derivitives include "Sari-Poro-Pet" (River lined with large reed bed) or "Sat-Poro-Pet" (Large dried-up river). The city was established in 1922.
