Kamokamo River Nostalgia
Interactive event about Japanese culture held at Nakajima Park and temples in the Susukino district of Sapporo
May 7–October 2 , 2016
Kamokamo River Nostalgia is an event that showcases Japanese culture under the concept of enjoying a day in the temple town of Susukino. The event is held at Higashi Honganji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Sapporo, and Shinzenkouji Temple, which houses wooden statues from the Heian period and the only Buddhist statue made of human ashes in Sapporo. Enjoy a variety of attractions such as hands-on classes about the tea ceremony, Japanese papermaking, and letter carving (for personal seals), as well as performances of Ainu music and Japanese musical instruments. Also, Nariwai Village, an event introducing Japanese handcrafts and performing arts will be held at the Japanese Garden in Nakajima Park, which is located next to Susukino. A wear-and-go kimono rental service is also offered, so you can stroll around the event grounds dressed in a kimono.
Guided tours of famous sightseeing spots in Nakajima Park and Susukino to be offered from May to October
Kamokamogawa Nostalgia will provide reasonably priced guided tours for the price of a single coin to experience the charms of Nakajima Park and the Susukino area, where you can feel Sapporo’s culture and history through the old sights and sounds of the city.
The walking tour of Nakajima Park will include the Japanese garden, the teahouse registered as a national important cultural property, and Hoheikan, built as a Western-style hotel by the Hokkaido Development Commission (also a designated national important cultural property). The Teramachi (temple district) Susukino tour will stop at four temples around the Susukino area, like a miniature version of the 88-temple pilgrimage in Shikoku, and Buddhist monks will be on hand to give talks. Take this opportunity to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of Sapporo off the beaten path.
