A café gallery where you can enjoy the art, architecture and food of Hokkaido
Saro Houmura is a café gallery designed by Hokkaido-born architect, Makoto Nakayama, which was awarded the Sapporo City Urban Design Award. The lighting from traditional-style floor-level windows and the sound of water flowing into a washbowl create a calm, relaxing atmosphere. It introduces a wide variety of art, such as paintings, sculptures, handcrafts and calligraphy, mainly from Hokkaido-based artists. They serve home cooking, made using Hokkaido ingredients, and visitors come from far and wide just to have a meal. It is a relaxation space created with the desire for patrons to “spend an enjoyable time, through the art, architecture and food of Hokkaido”. We hope you will also enjoy a chat with owner, Ms. Michiko Houmura, whose amiable personality endears her to the locals.
The "Washoku Hakozen" (¥1,200), made with around 30 ingredients, is a menu item so popular that it often sells out by the early afternoon. The original dorayaki is recommended as a souvenir.
Located diagonally across the street is Saro Houmura's sister store. In addition to enjoying the exhibits, you can also purchase objects and goods produced by artists.
